Liberation Day

You may not have given it much attention, but today is Liberation Day. Not less than 63 years ago Hitler's Third Reich finally disintegrated as his successor Grossadmiral Dönitz signed the document that, in effect, dictated that all hostilities should cease on European soil. Tyranny got the final blow, and those fatigued by the terrors of war could break into uninhibited jubilation.

We owe those who fought in the war something today. No, we need not hero-worship them. But we owe them a few moments of quiet reflection on the price they had to pay to secure the freedom we enjoy. This silent gesture of gratitude doesn't require much of us; just the will to pause and whisper 'thank you'.
