How stupid can you get?

During the Middle Ages, any and every problem was often ascribed to some malevolent, conspiratory action on part of the Jews, the pariahs of European society back then. No further explanation was provided for e.g the sudden outbreak of an epidemic, as none was needed. The scapegoats were there already.

And so the Jews were a handy target for base, mindless retaliation. Any rumour could set off a wave of violence, and more often than not death was doled out to young and old. Women were brutalized and raped, old men were humiliated and mistreated. And their only identifiable crime was really their ethnicity. The mobs never asked for proof of complicity. Raw, stupid instinct saw to it that judgment was passed and executed before even a single question was asked. Why wait for a mettlesome official to do the muckraking? Everybody knew the Jews were guilty. It was just a gut feeling. "But, hey, just look at them! Don't they look guilty?"

Even today, with information readily available through a lazy click on your computer keyboard, people seem to prefer prejudice over proof, stupidity over knowledge, bigotry over justice. And so Jews are once again singled out as the real culprits behind the global financial crisis. And once again, in Moscow and in Riyad, the cries are raised, in the streets and in the media, for Jews to pay for their alleged crimes.
