Sweet Comfort Band encore

They're probably only continuing a trend among former mainstream Christian groups and artists, but the reappearance of Sweet Comfort Band is a very welcome piece of old news to me.

Hailed by critics and adored by fans, the quartet now reduced to a three-member act is currently in the studio recording new songs for the first time since 1984. Bryan Duncan, Rick Thompson and Randy Thomas probably never envisioned performing together again once the decision to call it quits had been taken. But God, and co-founding member Kevin Thompson, had other ideas.

As the ailing, elder Thompson brother was coming to terms with his imminent death last year, he expressed to the other three musicians of the abandoned SWB his desire that they regroup - to serve and minister to lovers of excellent music.

Because SCB has always been a matter of top-rung musicianship, and throughout their career in the 1970s amd 80s the band always compared well with secular acts in the pop-, rock or r&b genres. Listening to SCB always provided hours of edification and a sense of pride in the fact that these were artists who never compromised on quality. It was excellence or nothing. And for that they were lauded and appreciated by scores of people, including myself.

I'm excited by the prospect of getting follow-ups to evergreens such as "Valerie", "Prodigal's regret" and dozens of other songs that still linger on in my mind. Welcome back, gentlemen. Welcome back.
