Answer-key to 'Heroes of the past: #5'

If the name you've come up with reads 'Dwight D. Eisenhower', you can congratulate yourself on this initial success.

Who was Dwight D. Eisenhower? The quick answer to that question is American general, Supreme Commander of The Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), and two-term president of the USA from 1953-1961. The rather lengthy acronym SHAEF is probably not remembered any longer, but what people who lived through WW2 do recall is an indomitable, outgoing, congenial general who was appointed to the crushing responsibility of heading the planning and execution of Operation Overlord, history's largest amphibious war operation to date.

Does D-day ring a bell? D-day, Decision Day, June 6 1944: Allied soldiers swarmed the Normandie beaches to deal a final blow to Adolf Hitler's crazy aspirations of a never-ending Third Reich. And the man with the proverbial giant grin gave the 'go' order to his subordinates, a decision he only could make. And for the rest of the war in Europe, this man kept the reins tightly, superbly leading his fellow officers and, consequently, the fighting troopers in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium onto their final destination: Berlin, the heart of the Nazi war machine.

Dwight D. Eisenhower wasn't the only hero of WW2, not by far. But without his excellent leadership qualities, battling Nazi domination could have claimed many more lives, and the war itself might easily have dragged on into 1946. But that's another story. But do find out more about this man. Why don't you try reading historian Stephen Ambrose's biography "Eisenhower: soldier and president"?
